Update from the BPC-53 meeting

The Biocidal Product Committee meeting of November 2024 adopted opinions on a number of active substances.

Opinions on active substances

The following active substance/PT combinations were discussed and evaluated:

  • The broad-spectrum active substance MIT was supported for PT6, covering a wide range of products that need preservation during storage;
  • MIT HCl was approved for PT6 for preservation in particular reagents for scientific research and development in the life science sector and in the production of bio-molecules;
  • Despite being known as an Endocrine Disruptor, DBNPA was approved by derogation for PT11 (preservatives for liquid-cooling and processing systems) because of its low application levels (20-50 ppm);
  • For Epsilon-Metofluthrin the renewal of PT18 was approved despite its status as Candidate for Substitution;
  • Epsilon-Metofluthrin was not approved as a repellant (PT19)

Note that the Commission Implementing Legislation has to confirm the BPC opinions. Nevertheless, manufacturers of existing biocidal products (already placed on the EU market under transitional legislation),  that contain one of these supported active substances, are advised to start thinking about the relevant biocidal product authorisation strategy. Opinions on Biocidal Product (families)

  • A major change of a Union authorisation of a biocidal product family containing Active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite for PT 2 (disinfection) was considered non-authorisable. The proposed change concerns the addition of a product to the family.
  • A biocidal product family (BPF) containing Propan-1-ol/Propan-2-ol for PTs 1, 2, 4 received a positive opinion on Union Authorisation. The BPF contains:
    • 2 hygienic handrubs and 1 surgical handrub covered under PT1. All covering a wide range of micro-organisms
    • Disinfection products for hard surfaces in healthcare (PT2),
    • Disinfection products for hard surfaces in healthcare food areas (PT4).
